Part Four: Reading the water (Understanding issues)

“You gotta know where the fish are running” – Uncle Jimmy

Let’s look at the big words and what they mean:

Political Party – Group of people with same ideas about running country

Campaign – When candidates tell mob what they’ll do if elected

Independent – Someone running for election on their own, not with a party

1: Spotting the signs

Here are the five key learning points from Marlee’s story about spotting important issues:

  1. Read the signs in community like we read the water for fish
  2. Pay attention to what mob is talking about – these are the important issues
  3. Different signs tell us different things, like housing needs or youth programs
  4. You need to watch and listen to understand what community needs
  5. Just like fishing spots change with seasons, community issues need constant attention
