Meet the family sharing their journey

This guide was created with Kimberley mob to share stories and learning about the political system in Australia, your voting rights, having your say, and being active in decisions that affect our communities. The stories come from this family’s journey learning about voting and democracy.

Let’s meet the family.

Uncle Jimmy

Traditional Owner, Ranger and Land Rights fighter from the 70s who loves teaching young ones about Country through his deadly stories in Kriol and English.

Sarah

Running the local store for 15 years with fair prices and community spirit, she’s always learning language and cultural protocols while supporting community events.

Marlee

Born in Halls Creek and now living in Kununurra, this deadly Aboriginal Health Worker and single mum is known for her damper and skill at bringing community together.

DJ

Fresh out of school in Kununurra, this 18-year-old is mixing his love of music and digital media with his work at the rec centre while dreaming up plans for a youth program.

Little Joanie

This curious three-year-old born in Derby keeps everyone on their toes with her constant “What’s that?” questions when she’s not busy chasing goannas or learning language from her grandfather.
